Thrash metal as derivative of speed metal

[edit]

I personally view "thrash" metal as derivative of speed metal. I don't recall ever hearing a slow thrash-metal band, but I have heard plenty of speed metal bands that were certainly not thrash.-- goatasaur

Album Art

[edit]

There isn't any information on the cover art, such as the artist's credit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.231.129.50 (talk) 12:49, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

[edit]

I'm trying to find out what the lyric is in "Expendable Youth", at about 2 minutes and 32 seconds into the song, just prior to the guitar solo. Doing a quick bit of googling, it is mostly quoted as being "Fight-ring you motherfucker (?)", but it certainly doesn't sound like that to me. No question about the last two words, but the first sounds like it could be "biting" or "blighting". Earlier I had thought it might have even been a reference to King (and thus, the imminent guitar solo). Anyone know what it actually says? fonetikli 22:38, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the speedy reply... but have another listen to it if you are able. I can't match your suggestion to what I'm hearing on the track. =/ fonetikli 22:58, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Frustratingly, Tom Araya doesn't sing that particular line in the live version on Decade of Aggression =( fonetikli 05:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect.

[edit]

I have a question: Why does the search 'blood red' redirect to this? Yes I know that the ablum's second track is 'Blood Red', but what if someone is looking for something... different? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.208.132.33 (talk) 03:48, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted that edit. Tealwisp (talk) 00:48, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Parental Advisory

[edit]

In response to the comment, "Seasons in the Abyss is one of few albums to be issued with a Parental Advisory label despite the virtual unusual absence of profanity unlike other Slayer albums." There are lyrics depicting violent acts. PA stickers are not just for swears but also for lyrics with references to drugs/alcohol use, and violence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.197.137.179 (talk) 05:06, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seasons in the Abyss: Best of both worlds, or pure thrash?

[edit]

An edit I made based on TV Tropes information was reverted. Here be proof that the slower style of South of Heaven is mixed with the faster style of Reign in Blood on this album. --Ryanasaurus0077 (talk) 00:33, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can't quote a wiki styled site that fails WP:RS criteria as a reference for proof of anything. Only valid references from sources which pass WP:RS can be used as a reference. The Real Libs-speak politely 00:43, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can I be a reliable source? Because I have the album and have listened to it in its entirety, and I noticed that some songs on the album (e.g. "Dead Skin Mask") were slower than others (e.g. "War Ensemble"). --Ryanasaurus0077 (talk) 15:15, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Can I be a reliable source?" No. That would violate Wikipedia:No original research. WesleyDodds (talk) 04:42, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And another thing: what do you mean Amazon's not reliable!? --Ryanasaurus0077 (talk) 01:38, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sources that should be used to edit music articles, includes: websites like Allmusic, PopMatters; magazines such as Rolling Stone, Spin, Decibel, Terrorizer, related books (The Bloody Reign of Slayer, Reign in Blood), etc. See also Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Resources.--Cannibaloki 02:38, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I survive the sockpuppet investigation, I will check those sources, mark my words. --Ryanasaurus0077 (talk) 03:29, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Checklist

[edit]

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
    B. MoS compliance:
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. References to sources:
    B. Citation of reliable sources where necessary:
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
Blabbermouth.net said that the album is "considered to be among the genre's all-time classics." "War Ensemble", "Dead Skin Mask", and "Seasons In The Abyss" were described as "the preeminent list of metal standards that [Seasons in the Abyss] spawned has rarely been matched by others." The problem here is that the source is just a news article promoting the band's 'Carnage' tours.
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are copyright tagged, and non-free images have fair use rationales:
File:Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss.jpg is 500 pixels, but should be a maximum 300 pixels.
    B. Images are provided where possible and appropriate, with suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
    Failed (see revision as of 18:34, 12 August 2010).--Cannibaloki 19:35, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]
  • Seasons in the Abyss (also referred to as Seasons) is the fifth studio album by the thrash metal band Slayer. It was released on October 9, 1990 through Def American Records, and later through American Recordings after the company changed its name. It should be reworded. Seasons in the Abyss is the fifth studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer, released through Def American Recordings, on October 9, 1990.
  • "Temptation" (track #8) featured an overdub of lead vocalist Tom Araya's singing, because the first vocal track was not erased between the takes. Simply out of place in the lead section. Anyway, it sounds like fancruft.
  • Within its first few years, the album was not available in many stores, solely because of the band's "extreme sound." This sentence is an example of original research, as the source said only that "...the band's extreme sound was distinctly unwelcome at the muisc channel and most of rock-radio outlets, leaving Slayer to develop its intensely loyal following on the road."
  • As an experimental album full of several elements, it "fuses its two predecessors," South of Heaven and Reign in Blood. This is just an unencyclopedic opinion of someone that contradict itself. According to Allmusic: Essentially, Seasons fuses its two predecessors, periodically kicking up the mid-tempo grooves of South of Heaven with manic bursts of aggression. [...] Since the band is refining rather than progressing or experimenting, Seasons doesn't have quite the freshness of its predecessors, but aside from that drawback, it's strong almost all the way from top to bottom (with perhaps one or two exceptions).

Article

[edit]

 Doin...

Lead

[edit]
  • Would be better to improve the lead a bit. Try and add more info from the body into it. The lead is supposed to talk briefly about most of the article.
  • The entertainment Weekly and Allmusic info doesn't belong there, it belongs in the critical reception section. You should use the extra space to write more about the background and any other info. 2 full paragraphs seems appropriate.
  • I wouldn't put the part about Temptation in the beginning, the information is to specific. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.45.174.153 (talk) 13:11, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recording and production

[edit]
  • two separate places -> studios.
  • Seasons in the Abyss was produced by Rick Rubin. It is their third album to be produced by Rubin. -> try to not cut the sentences up so much, it reads weirdly. Try and include both in one sentence.
  • "Temptation" (track #8) -> indicate it in the text, not parentheses
  • This paragraph needs significant re-writing

Musical styles and lyrical themes

[edit]

On a whole, this section is a mess. It really looks like a continued "reception" section. It should dedicate specifically to the theme of the section, discussing the music and the meaning of its lyrics. ot calling it a "masterpiece" etc.

Release and reception

[edit]
  • You should give more info of the certifications, such as the RIAA certified it denoting shipment of 500K etc. Same goes for Canada.

Charts

[edit]
  • you should place them in order.
  • you should make a separate column for certifications.

That's all good luck.--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 19:23, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Certification?

[edit]

The RIAA website states that this album has certified Gold. The article's claim of 3xPlatinum certification is incorrect. LaughingSkull (talk) 16:25, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
